This week, two Orthodox organizations, The Orthodox Union and Agudath Israel, came out in a joint statement against a New York State bill that would legalize same sex marriage. Part of the statement read as follows:
“We are deeply concerned that should any such redefinition [of marriage] occur, citizens of New York who are members of traditional communities like ours will incur moral opprobrium and risk legal sanction if they refuse to transgress their beliefs. That prospect is chilling, and should be unacceptable…”
Was it right for these two groups to come out against the bill? I mean, I’m not surprised they did. I just don’t know if it was their role.
