And In the Seventh Year: Shmita Then and Now

Hosted By: Haberman Institute

Field

Join us online for a panel discussion moderated by Rav Natan Freller, with author and ecologist, Rabbi David Seidenberg and Hazon’s Bruce Spierer.

The Bible tells us that every seventh year will be a Shmita or sabbatical year. In the Shmita year, debts are to be forgiven, agricultural lands to lie fallow, private landholdings to become open to the commons, and staples such as food storage and perennial harvests to be freely redistributed and accessible to all. How was this actually practiced in Biblical and later times? What does it look like in Israel today? What are the social and ecological repercussions of such a practice?
