An Introduction to the Principles of Coastside Mussar
Hosted By: Coastside Jewish Community
While Lithuanian rabbis had a profound influence on the practice of Mussar over the last 150 years, most of its principles and practices originated long before the 19th century. In fact, similar principles and practices can be found in other traditions and disciplines, both ancient and contemporary. Coastside Mussar is an approach that recognizes that Mussar need not be rooted solely in traditional, theistically-oriented texts. Although it doesn’t require a belief in God, it does require a belief in our innate human capacity for growth and change. Coastside Mussar is one of the few approaches to Mussar that celebrates the universality of its principles and practices, making them easily accessible to people of all beliefs and backgrounds.
