Escape from Berlin in 1939: Fleeing from the Home and Homeland

Hosted By: CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center (Indiana)

Jean Kristeller’s grandparents, Ada and Leo Kristeller, and their daughter, Anne, left Berlin in February 1939. They had already sent their son George, her father, to England for school in 1936. Her grandfather was a physician, and her grandmother was related to the Arnhold family, prominent bankers. Leo served in the German military, and the family was proud of their German and Jewish heritage. Kristeller will speak to the complexities of their decisions, departure, ability to re-establish themselves in NYC, and other family members who fled earlier after Hitler came to power.
