On July 18, 1941, most of the Jewish population — 175 people — of the small Latvian town Akniste were murdered by the local Latvian nationalists. Akniste was proclaimed to be free of Jews by the time German troops arrived days later.
It was simply by chance that 20-year-old Mozus Berkovich survived. Studying in Riga, he made visits home to his family in Akniste almost every weekend. But four days before the massacre, Mozus’s father could sense something bad was about to happen — and he told him not to come. That was the last time Mozus heard his father’s voice.
The only testimony to these horrific events was recorded 72 years later by his grandson months before Mozus passed away…
