Kristallnacht: Visual Responses
Hosted By: The Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University
November 9- 10 marks the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the 1938 “Night of Broken Glass” in Germany, Austria, and Sudentenland. On this night, Jewish synagogues, homes, and stores were vandalized and destroyed, over a hundred people were killed, and some thirty thousand Jewish men were sent to Nazi concentration camps. Official targeting of the Jewish population worsened following this event. How have visual artists responded to this horrific event? In this talk, we will look at select examples of art works by European and American artists, Jews and non-Jews, whose visual responses range from rage to visions for a better future. This will include architectural sculptures by Frank Stella, Audrey Flack’s images of hope and devastation, as well as works by Chagall and Picasso.
