Music of Salamone Rossi
Salamone Rossi (1578-ca. 1628) was the first person to compose and publish Jewish choral music to illuminate sacred Hebrew texts. In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the publication of his ground-breaking “HaShirim Asher LiShlomo,” (“The Songs According to Solomon”[Rossi]). The Mantua Singers, under the direction of Matthew Lazar, will present a selection of his works for combinations of 3 – 8 voices. The Mantua Singers was created by Matthew Lazar to give voice to the extraordinary Jewish music of Salamone Rossi. While its members all enjoy successful solo careers, their combined sound, coupled with their unique ability to realize the Jewish sensibilities of the Italian master create an unparalleled ensemble.
Mr. Lazar will also offer insights into the unique combination of faith, hope and innovation that found expression in Rossi’s art.
A program of the Zamir Coral Foundation.
