The In-Betweens: Jewish Identity and Race in America
Hosted By: American Jewish University
In this virtual interview, Davon Loeb and AJU’s Rick Richman discuss Loeb’s lyrical memoir, “The In-Betweens,” which tells the story of a biracial boy coming-of-age in America while struggling to find his place in society. Loeb shares his experience growing up as the child of a Black mother and white Jewish father in a predominantly white community, where despite his efforts to fit in, he acutely feels his difference, such as being singled out during Black History Month. Despite the many adversities he faces, Loeb also speaks about the moments of freedom and joy he experienced during his childhood and teenage years. This rich narrative that reflects identity, race, and culture, tells an individual story universally, where readers will see themselves throughout.
