Evolving Tradition: Deepening Our Understanding of Reconstructionist Judaism

“The newest of the major Jewish denominations may be one of the smallest but it has had an outsized impact on the contemporary Jewish world. Reconstructionism and its founder, Mordecai Kaplan, can be credited for everything from the first Bat Mitzvah to the vision of Jewish Community Centers, creative theology to social justice activism. In this participatory class, we will learn about Mordecai Kaplan and see how his ideas and new ways of understanding Jewish community has impacted Jews across the spectrum of denominations. We’ll also delve into new ways of understanding theology and faith and discuss the many ways that a Reconstructionist philosophy can help us make sense of contemporary issues and challenges.
