Evolving Tradition: Deepening Our Understanding of Reconstructionist Judaism
Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning
“The newest of the major Jewish denominations may be one of the smallest but it has had an outsized impact on the contemporary Jewish world. Reconstructionism and its founder, Mordecai Kaplan, can be credited for everything from the first Bat Mitzvah to the vision of Jewish Community Centers, creative theology to social justice activism. In this participatory class, we will learn about Mordecai Kaplan and see how his ideas and new ways of understanding Jewish community has impacted Jews across the spectrum of denominations. We’ll also delve into new ways of understanding theology and faith and discuss the many ways that a Reconstructionist philosophy can help us make sense of contemporary issues and challenges. Join Reconstructionist thought-leader Rabbi Boris Dolin for this insightful exploration about the evolution of Reconstructionist Judaism.
This is the first in a four-part series Melton is proudly offering in 5784 exploring major denominations in Judaism. Stay tuned for more information about courses exploring Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox Judaism in the year ahead!”
