Melton Meets the Moment: Understanding the Backstory of the War in Israel
Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning
The horrific events of October 7th and the war that followed have left Israeli society and the Jewish people in a state of shock, pain, and horror. In response, Israelis have sprung into action in truly remarkable ways, enlisting to serve in the army, volunteering to support soldiers in a myriad of ways, and organizing to ensure the wellbeing of close to half a million people evacuated from their homes in the North and South. Alongside all these acts of kindness there is still so much we struggle to wrap our heads around. In this program, led by Melton Travel educator Daniella Gefen, we will break down some of the most challenging questions facing Israel right now. How do Israelis understand their new reality? What sorts of immediate and long-term challenges are of greatest concern? What can we learn about Gaza’s history that can provide us with important context to understanding this war? How do Israelis view American support? And, most importantly, how will Israel get through this?
