Chanukah HerTorah: Shining Our Light in a Time of Antisemitism

Hosted By: SVIVAH

On Chanukah, we wear our Jewish identity out in the open. We have different December rituals than our neighbors, lighting our candles in the window and marking our houses as Jewish homes. This year, the increased antisemitism we see all around us makes this Chanukah even more complicated.

How do we feel about “outing” ourselves as Jews in public these days? Do we light our Chanukah candles in the window? Do we put up or take down mezuzahs? Do we tell our colleagues or people in our communities that we are Jewish? Do we wear our Jewish star necklaces? Do we wear our Chanukah sweaters to the office holiday party?

What can we learn from Torah sources about these choices? How can these sources give us strength?

This Tuesday, the sixth night of Chanukah, we will be joined by three outstanding educators – Dr. Laura Shaw Frank, Rabba Yaffa Epstein, Rabbi Esther Reed — who will share their experiences dealing with antisemitism in US society and on college campuses, sharing the Torah that speaks to them at this difficult time.

Join SVIVAH. You will light Chanukah candles together as a community.

SVIVAH

SVIVAH’s mission is to empower, strengthen, and nourish Jewish women* through community. SVIVAH is a multigenerational, diverse, powerful collective of Jewish women* dedicated to inspiring, motivating, and celebrating life in sisterhood. In Hebrew, svivah means “to surround her'' and that is precisely our goal. We connect women to each other, to cross-generational wisdom, to Jewish learning, and to the resources we need, in an inclusive, women*-only space. We do this by curating Jewish faith experiences with women at the center, by producing wide-ranging programming, and by amplifying and partnering with organizations in line with our values. (*SVIVAH defines “Jewish woman” as anyone wishing to be included in a circle of Jewish women.)
