Thought Process: Jewish Law and Mental Health

Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

Every decade or so, societal shifts emerging from economic development, technological innovation, and medical research force rabbis to clarify Torah values and to issue Jewish legal guidelines on new matters that need to be addressed. Recently, one of the main topics is mental health and Jewish law. In this four-part series taught by expert Melton educator Rabbi Johnny Solomon, we will explore some of the questions being asked today, as well as the responses being provided. We will begin with a session on methodological considerations to see how Jewish law is determined in response to questions of mental health. This will then be followed by three sessions examining the way religious observance is challenging for individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, OCD, and eating disorders. We hope you can join us for this important course offered during a time when many are struggling with mental health challenges.
