Traces of a Jewish Artist: The Lost Life and Work of Rahel Szalit

Hosted By: The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art

Kerry Wallach, a professor and author from Gettysburg College, will explore the life and work of Rahel Szalit, a prominent Jewish woman artist in Weimar Berlin. Szalit’s work, which includes illustrations and paintings from 1920s Berlin and 1930s Paris, features a variety of media like lithographs, pen and ink, and watercolors, often portraying women, city scenes, and landscapes. The presentation will contextualize Szalit’s contributions within Jewish and avant-garde movements like Expressionism and New Objectivity.
