Once Upon a Time in the East: Jews in the GDR

This talk will discuss Jewish life in the GDR, the Eastern (socialist) part of Germany between 1949-1989. Referencing key historical dates in the history of Jews in the GDR, as well as key Jewish cultural figures, politicians, and community actors, Professor Gelbin will outline the positions of social participation and political agency available to Jews in the authoritarian regime.
