Qesher Book Club: ‘Monsters and Miracles: Horror, Heroes, and the Holocaust’

Hosted By: Qesher

In World War II, Al Kitmacher led his Jewish family to safety and miraculously survived the Warsaw Ghetto and Nazi death camps, while Pearl Harris, through her military service, aided Jews persecuted by the Nazis. Author Ira Wesley Kitmacher gives a voice to his family lost in the Holocaust, recreating their experiences in Nazi Europe in the 1930s and 1940s, and delves into the roots of antisemitism through the study of folklore and stereotypes. His narrative uses a cinematic approach to the Holocaust, blending horror with heroism and discussing longstanding beliefs in monsters, angels, and the supernatural to understand the Holocaust’s origins and the contemporary resurgence of antisemitism.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
