Jewish Paris: A City of Contrasts

Hosted By: Qesher

In 2024, Paris is still one of the main Jewish centers in the world. Local community member and activist Emmanuelle Stein will describe what Jewish life looks like today in Paris, especially in light of the October 7th attacks and the increase in antisemitism. She will also discuss the beginnings of the Jewish presence in Paris since the Middle Ages, their emancipation under Napoleon, and the events of WWII. She will comment on the waves of modern Jewish immigration to the city, first from Eastern Europe and then from North Africa, and discover their neighborhoods, synagogues, and community institutions.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
