Jewish End-of-Life Herbalism
Hosted By: Ben Zakkai Institute
The Ben Zakkai Institute offers a class on Jewish end-of-life herbalism, focusing on the folk traditions used to honor the dead and facilitate their transition. Participants will learn about herbalism practices in Jewish cemeteries, including funerals, graveside customs, Ashkenazi wick measuring for candle making, and Romaniote shroud parties. The course will also examine herbs and foods associated with mourning and discuss how diasporic Jewish communities managed burial practices when access to Jewish cemeteries was not possible.
