The Jewish Metropolis: A Tour of Jewish New York Through Time and Space

Hosted By: Qesher

New York City is the greatest Jewish metropolis of all time, with Jews once constituting nearly 30 percent of the population and influencing the city’s culture, economy, and politics. From the establishment of the first community in 1654 to the present, New York Jews have pioneered religious reform, led the resurgence of traditionalist orthodoxy, and spanned the socio-economic spectrum from wealthy financiers to poor shop workers. This talk will offer a virtual tour of Jewish New York through time and space, from the 17th century to the 21st, and from the tenements of the Lower East Side to leafy Riverdale.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
