Art and Internment: Heinz Henghes — The Stowaway Sculptor

Hosted By: The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art

Ian Henghes will speak about his father, Heinz Henghes (1906-1975), and his extraordinary story, including his interactions with other artists, writers, and thinkers of his time. Heinz, born in Hamburg to a mixed Jewish and German family, spent nearly 10 years in America before returning to Europe during a period of great political unrest. Despite the antisemitism of his patron Ezra Pound, Heinz spent time in Italy, and during the outbreak of World War II, he was interned in London and sent to Australia on the notorious ship the Dunera.
