Where Gogol Got Souls: Slavery and Society in 19th-Century Russia

Jewish Museum Milwaukee will host a lecture on Russian society’s economic structure and its influence on Gogol’s “Dead Souls.” The talk will cover how the novel is both a product and critique of these social and economic structures, requiring familiarity with Russian society of the time. Joe Peschio, associate professor of Russian at UW-Milwaukee, will provide the necessary background to understand Gogol’s masterpiece and its significance in Russian culture.
