Qesher Book Club: ‘Shalom Uganda’

Hosted By: Qesher

Qesher hosts a book club event featuring Janice Masur’s “Shalom Uganda: A Jewish Community on the Equator.” The book recounts Masur’s experience growing up in a small Ashkenazi Jewish community in Kampala, Uganda, from 1949 to 1961, under British Imperial rule. Despite the community’s efforts to maintain their Jewish identity, it eventually withered, and Masur’s book serves as the only scholarship documenting Kampala’s European Jewry.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
