Painted Memories of a Jewish Childhood in Poland Before the Holocaust

Hosted By: The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art

Mayer Kirshenblatt (1916-2009) dedicated his later years to capturing the world of his childhood in Opatów, Poland, through paintings and stories, preserving the vibrant life of Jewish communities before the Holocaust. After moving to Canada in 1934 and sharing stories with his family for years, he began painting at age 73, eventually creating hundreds of works that vividly depicted his youth. This lecture by his daughter, Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, will explore his artistry and its significance, framed by exhibitions at the Jewish Museum in New York and POLIN Museum in Warsaw, as part of the online series “Flight or Fight: Stories of Artists Under Repression” by The Fritz Ascher Society in New York.
