A Jewish Quality in the Music of Vienna

Hosted By: Haberman Institute

The Haberman Institute for Jewish Studies will host a presentation by music historian Saul Lilienstein, exploring the Jewish influence in some of the great music now considered distinctly Viennese. Vienna served as a linguistic crossroads for Czech, German, Hungarian, and Yiddish languages, becoming the most prominent center of Jewish culture in Europe by the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The session will highlight how Vienna, the city of music, was attuned to the sounds and cultural contributions of its diverse communities.
