Bialystoker Landsmanshaftn and the Historic LES Walking Tour

Hosted By: The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy (LESJC)

The Lower East Side was once home to hundreds of synagogues built by landsleit—Jewish immigrants from the same villages, towns, or regions who formed mutual-aid societies to support one another. This tour explores the legacy of these landsmanshaftn, including a visit to the historic Bialystoker Synagogue and the former Bialystoker Home for the Aged. Participants will also walk along East Broadway’s shtiebel row, passing former one-room synagogues and sites that once housed bustling markets, garment shops, theaters, and Yiddish newspapers.
