East of the Holocaust: Jewish Refuge in Wartime Asia

Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Education presents a session exploring the little-known experiences of the approximately 40,000 Jews who lived in Asia during World War II. Set against the broader backdrop of Chinese and Japanese wartime policy toward Jews, the class examines the histories of Baghdadi Jews in Calcutta, European Jewish refugees in Shanghai, and the internment of Jews in Singapore under Japanese occupation. This session uncovers a complex and global chapter of Jewish history—one of unlikely encounters, temporary sanctuaries, and shifting political landscapes.
