Senator Kim Hendren from Arkansas is in a little bit of trouble this week. At a recent speaking event in Pulaski County, Arkansas, Hendren referred to his colleague from New York, Charles Schumer, as “that Jew.”
Now Hendren is trying to backtrack. He claims that because he wasn’t reading from a teleprompter, he let his mouth run (How does that make any difference?). He was trying to give examples of how the two disagree with each other. Now he is saying it has nothing to do with his Judaism.
Just look what he said: “I don’t care if he’s Jewish, Muslim, Catholic or whatever. Although I said there was another Jew that I did agree with, and that was Jesus Christ.”
You know, I think we’re being a little unfair to Hendren. Maybe we should give him the benefit of the doubt. We should at least look at the context for why he referred to Schumer as a Jew. Hendren was responding to comments made by Schumer on MSNBC where he claimed to have traditional American values, something Hendren disagreed with.
Hendren’s explanation: “I was simply making a point…I believe in those traditional values like Andy Griffith, Aunt Bea, Barney and Opie.”
We’re getting this story all wrong. Hendren must be Orthodox and he obviously rejects Schumer’s claim to be a traditional Jew while davening at an egalitarian Conservative synagogue.
See, he’s not an anti-Semite. I’m glad we cleared that up.
