Beverly Paris and Dr. Miri Freud-Kandel
Beverley was born in New Zealand, spent 20+ years enjoying the Zionist dream before moving to London where she lives with her family. She is both proudly Jewish and Feminist so partnership minyanim are a no-brainer for her. She was a member of Shira Hadasha in Jersualem and didn't realize how critical this type of experience was to her spiritual well-being until she found herself in shule in London. While she couldn't be more grateful for THE local community's warm welcome she hopes to repay it in kind by making sure the Shira Hadasha experience is as easy to come by in London, as it was in Jerusalem. In her spare time she works at Yahoo as an International Account Manager. Dr. Miri Freud-Kandel is a Fellow and lecturer in Modern Judaism at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies (OCHJS) and teaches in the Oriental Institute and Faculty of Theology and Religion, University of Oxford. She received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from University of Cambridge. Her main research interests are: the theological development of Jewish religious movements and denominationalism; the development and theology of Orthodox forms of Judaism, especially notions of a Modern Orthodoxy; British-Jewry, and the British chief rabbinate; Gender issues in modern Judaism; and the theology of Louis Jacobs. She is the author of Orthodox Judaism in Britain Since 1913: An Ideology Forsaken (London: Vallentine Mitchell, 2006) and co-editor of Modern Judaism: An Oxford Guide (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2005). Her scholarly articles have appeared in leading academic journals including Modern Judaism and The Journal of Modern Jewish Studies. She is currently conducting research for a full-length monograph entitled Louis Jacobs and the construction of modern theologies of Judaism. In 2013, she was co-convener of the Oxford Seminar on Orthodox Judaism and Theology in the Twentieth Century at the OCHJS.
