Commentary on Parashat Vayechi, Genesis 47:28-50:26

So Joseph died at a hundred and ten years old. And they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt. (Genesis 50:26)

 

וַיָּמָת יוֹסֵף, בֶּן-מֵאָה וָעֶשֶׂר שָׁנִים; וַיַּחַנְטוּ אתוֹ, וַיִּישֶׂם בָּאָרוֹן בְּמִצְרָיִם

This is Joseph embalmed–like an Egyptian, as this was where he lived and died. His bones are later brought out from Egypt, as promised, when the Hebrews are set free from slavery.
