Exploring The Beilis Affair
Hosted By: My Jewish Learning
Mendel Beilis was a Ukrainian Jew tried on charges of ritually murdering a young Christian boy in 1911. Like the better-known Dreyfus Affair in France several years earlier, the case confirmed for many Ukrainian Jews that the country’s leadership was fundamentally antisemitic and drove many to emigrate.
Led by Beilis’ grandson, this class will explore the history of the blood libel, the historical significance of the Beilis trial, and how it affected the Beilis family.
