‘Homes of the Past: A Lost Jewish Museum’
Hosted By: YIVO
In the 1940s in New York, a group of immigrant Jewish scholars from Poland, associated with the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, sought to establish a museum to commemorate the Jewish lives, places, and cultures of Eastern Europe that were being destroyed. These scholars, unable to return to their homes and continue their research in Europe, initiated the Museum of the Homes of the Past to memorialize East European Jewry and educate American Jews about this legacy. Although the project was eventually abandoned after the war, it represented a significant moment in the interaction between Jewish communities in America and Eastern Europe. Join YIVO for a discussion with author Jeffrey Shandler about this episode, led by Deborah Dash Moore.
