Homes of the Past: A Lost Jewish Museum

Hosted By: The Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life at Rutgers University

Jeffrey Shandler, Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at Rutgers University, will present his new book, “Homes of the Past: A Lost Jewish Museum” (Indiana University Press, 2024). The book tells the story of how immigrant Jewish scholars in 1940s New York, newly arrived from Eastern Europe, sought to create a museum to commemorate the Jewish cultures destroyed during the Holocaust. Though the project was never realized, “Homes of the Past” explores this significant moment in modern Jewish and museum history, highlighting the relationship between Jews in America and Eastern Europe.
