Is the ‘Golden Age’ Over for American Jews?
Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning
In March 2024, Franklin Foer published an article in The Atlantic titled “The Golden Age of American Jews is Ending,” suggesting that “Anti-Semitism Has Gone Mainstream” and marking the “close [of] an unprecedented period of safety and prosperity for Jewish Americans.” This session, led by American Jewish historian Dr. David Kaufman, will evaluate whether Foer’s perspective is an accurate portrayal or an example of the longstanding Jewish tradition of “ever-dying” pessimism. The discussion will focus on the rise and decline of the American Jewish “golden age” and the broader concept of American Jewish historical “exceptionalism.”
