Jewish Languages Today: Endangered, Surviving, and Thriving
Hosted By: Qesher
Throughout history, Jews around the world have spoken many languages. In this multimedia session, you will learn what these languages have had in common and how they are currently shifting. Over the past two centuries, migrations and other historical events have led to major changes in the linguistic profile of Jewish communities around the world. Several long-standing Jewish languages have become endangered. At the same time, Jews are engaging with these languages in “post-vernacular” ways. Dr. Benor will explain these developments and highlight the urgent need for documentation and reclamation.
