The Music of Tisha B’Av
Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning
Music and Tisha B’Av are almost a contradiction in terms. After all, it was because of the destruction of the Second Temple that instrumental music was banned in Jewish prayer for centuries. But the singing of scripture, liturgy, and scholarly text seems to be a practice which never abated. Join expert Melton teacher Cantor David Lipp to learn some of the history and practice of the music of Tisha B’Av which includes the Book of Lamentations, the alteration of liturgical modes and the Kinot, the poems of despair that Jews traditionally chant to commemorate the loss of the Temple.
