The Time Traveling Guest at the Back of the Class
Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning
Melton curriculum writer Catriella Freedman will explore one of the most unusual Talmudic stories involving a rabbinic case of time travel. The tale, in which Moses finds himself in Rabbi Akiva’s 1st-century classroom and is seated in the back row with the least experienced students, offers a unique perspective on how the ancient rabbis viewed the evolution of Jewish law and the oral tradition. This discussion provides an opportunity to examine the rabbis’ understanding of their role in transmitting Jewish law and tradition.
