Virtual Walking Tour of Jewish Ljubljana
Hosted By: Baltimore Zionist District
Join the Baltimore zionist District to explore a once thriving medieval community to one of the smallest Jewish communities in Europe today; with only 150 Jews remaining, Slovenia’s Jewish community has survived cruel medieval expulsions and suffered the ravages of 20th-century war, only to find itself eroding even more during subsequent years of socialist rule. In this live, virtual tour, we visit sites within Ljubljana’s old Jewish Quarter. We explore Slovenia’s Jewish history, culture, and heritage.
Our guide will also discuss Jewish life in a Christian society and talk about the city’s notable Jewish residents. On our tour, our guide Mateja will share how some managed to survive WWII and what happened to the Jewish community during Communism in Yugoslavia. She will also reveal why Jewish people are now called JUDJE and no longer ŽIDJE. Join us as we learn about the Jewish community’s present and past life in Ljubljana.
