Woman of Valor: Exploring the Most Famous Poem in the Book of Proverbs

Hosted By: My Jewish Learning

What does it mean to be “a woman of valor,” and how can the power of art help us interpret an ancient poem for our own times? In this creative class, we’ll explore Eshet Chayil, a poem from the Book of Proverbs that’s beloved by many for its expression of gratitude for women’s capacity to work powerfully in many modes: agricultural, domestic, creative, and more. But some readers critique this passage as glamorizing the expectation of endless labor from women.

In this session, musician and Torah teacher Alicia Jo Rabins will lead participants through a close reading of Eshet Chayil and perform her own song (from her Girls in Trouble song cycle) about the character. Then you’ll be invited to pick up a pen, pencil, watercolor or instrument and add your own interpretation to the canon. No previous text study or artistic experience needed!

Enjoy the recording below.
