Avocado toast has had a great run, even if it has prevented millennials from being able to afford buying a house one day. Imported from Australia, Americans have embraced the trendy toast in every iteration including our own favorite, with lox. And its popularity should come as no surprise — avocado toast is easy enough to make at home, delicious, filling, and oh yeah, super photogenic on Instagram.
But there may be a new toast in town: hummus toast. Like avocado, hummus is versatile, spreadable, and pretty healthy to boot. And one of my favorite bloggers, Gimme Some Oven aka Ali Martin, has recently suggested several varieties of hummus toast toppings including everything bagel spice, fried eggs, basil & tomato, honey & banana, and yes, avocado too.
A quick search on Pinterest reveals countless other versions of hummus toast including Nutmeg Nanny’s shakshuka hummus toast (a double Israeli whammy!), pickled cucumber hummus toast from Lucy and Lentils, and this bright and beautiful beet hummus toast with figs and goat cheese from Chelsea’s Healthy Kitchen.
We’re on board for the hummus toast takeover for so many reasons. And while avocados can be quite pricy, chickpeas are relatively cheap and packed in protein, so this hummus toast craze may also be good for your wallet, too. Time for your house fund?
